Carpool Safety

Carpooling is an arrangement made by a group of individuals who must commute on a regular basis. Traffic congestion, fuel costs, pollution and global warming have become serious problems in society. Carpooling is one way of alleviating these problems to a large degree.

There are usually three types of carpoolers.
  1. Drive Only - one person drives each day and receives a set
    fee from each rider.
  2. Ride Only - you ride each day and pay a set fee for the priviledge.
  3. Shared Driving - drivers alternate on a daily or weekly basis.

Commuters that live in the same general area and have destinations that are reasonably close form the best potential carpool arrangement. For safety purposes, it is advisable to have carpools of three people or more.
Initial contact should be made by e-mail only to maintain privacy and safety. A meeting of people in the carpool should be arranged to work out the details - meeting places, leaving and pick up times, driver etiquette etc. Such a meeting should help you decide on the suitability of potential carpoolers.
Driver etiquette should be discussed - members should agree about items such as smoking, speeding, aggressive driving in general, punctuality, etc. ahead of time. Iron out all the details at this meeting so possible problems later can be avoided.
Large public parking lots are good meeting places - shopping malls, go train parking lots etc.
Have each person provide a list of personal references (employer, teacher, clergy etc) whom you could contact if you had any doubts about any people in your group.
Arrange for a trial period for one week. Meet at a local shopping plaza during this trial period. If things don't work out, you can contact the person by e-mail and still maintain your privacy.
